Day 1
Day One, (35 + 33km)
The tour departs
Christchurch at 8am, traveling to Tekapo before taking to the bikes for
our first ride along the Tekapo canal. After a picnic lunch beside the
lake, its southward to the hydro road along the Ohau Canal to the
outlet of Lake Ohau, with great views across the lake to the Ohau Range.
We stay at Lake Ohau Lodge for the night. Distances and terrain: 35km Tekapo
Canal, downhill or flat, 19km to Lake Ohau outlet, 33km back to main road,
downhill or flat
Day Two,
(23km +30km)
We ride out
of the Lodge, down to the main road , with an option of a transfer to Otematata
for the start of one of the quietest back roads we know, the back road
around Lake Aviemore. If we get a tail wind , which is not that uncommon
in this valley, and you want a few more kms to make an honest days ride,
it’s a further 15km to Kurow for the night. Accomodation at Kurow
motels for larger groups, or a local farmstay for smaller groups
Distances and terrain: 23km Ohau Lodge to Main Road, flat and gently rolling,
43km from Otematata to Kurow, one uphill over dam, rest gently rolling
or flat
Day Three,
(56km)
Prepare for
a historical journey through the Vanish World Trail today as we see first
the rare whale bones at Earthquakes, followed soon after the start of our
ride with Maori Rock Drawings. The trail winds its way through the
Kakanui Valley, past limestone outcrops with names like Island Cliff and
Rakis Table and down to the coast at Kakanui, famous for its rich volcanic
soil and horticultural microclimate. After dinner tonight we have the opportunity
to see the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony as they return to feed their chicks
after a day at sea.
Distances
and terrain: 56km, a couple of short uphills near the start, balance downhill
or gently rolling, additional 14km ride to Oamaru for those who want more
distance
Day Four,
(54km)
Cycle
from Genavy to Waimate, past Gum Tree Flat, down through the Waimate Gorge,
into Waimate for a coffee then along the base of the foothills first to
Hunter for a picnic lunch and on to Timaru, then a chance to rest in the
van as we return to Christchurch, arriving about 6pm Distances and
terrain: 21km to Waimate, a couple of short uphills near the start, balance
